Nzimande calls urgent briefing on university fees protests

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande is to hold an urgent media briefing at 2pm on Monday “on the current situation in various universities in South Africa”.

The Dispatch reported earlier that operations on at least three of the country’s biggest campuses were cancelled because of protests over fees.

The University of Cape Town suspended “all lectures‚ academic and other operations” as the “situation presents a threat to the safety of staff and students”.

Academic and other activities were suspended at Rhodes University after hundreds of protesting students blocked every entry road and entrance to the university from the crack of dawn.

The University of the Witwatersrand was officially closed on Monday‚ but its Council‚ which met for several hours on Sunday to discuss its response to the agreement signed between its exco and student representatives on Saturday morning‚ said it would report to the students and their representatives at noon on Monday.

“Nzimande is urgently inviting the media to address them on the current universities fee increase proposal and the strikes looming in our institutions‚” a departmental said.
