A 29-year-old man was killed and three others sustained severe burn wounds after they were struck by a lightning bolt in Mqanduli this afternoon. The victims were slaughtering a beast near the kraal in GqubeniVillage when they were struck around 3pm.
Health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the deceased could not be identified before his next of kin had been informed. He said ambulances were dispatched to the scene at around 3.15pm.
Kupelo said he did not want to speculate on how the victims got caught up in the lightning but advised residents to take extra precautions when there was lightning.
"When they build they must use large windows because smaller windows increase the temperature inside homes. Heat attracts lightning. They should keep indoors and sit on the floor. They must avoid smoking and standing next to trees. That is very dangerous," said Kupelo.
