ORT Youth League picks Mzobe over Mabe, Lamola

The ANC Youth League in OR Tambo want national convener Magasela Mzobe to lead them come the national elective conference.

This was one of the resolutions taken during the youth league’s regional elective conference yesterday.

The region tried convening three times before but the conferences degenerated into chaos, with one group abandoning the proceedings.

There were claims of bribery involving older members, who had been accused of sending money to delegates via e-wallet cash transfers.

At one point the provincial task team dissolved the regional structure that was elected last month. The dissolution was confirmed by the mother body’s national executive committee (NEC), despite the conference being officiated by the youth league’s national task team.

During yesterday’s election, Ayanda Gantsho of Port St Johns was elected regional chairman, with Dumisani Mchosini of Ngquza as his deputy.

Former Sasco provincial leader Mvuzo Mxenge of Nyandeni is the new secretary, with King Sabata Dalindyebo’s Mntuwoxolo Ngudle as his deputy.

The only woman in the top five, Nolundi Ludidi of Mhlontlo, was elected treasurer.

The new structure supported Nathi Nqoko for provincial chairman with Butsha Lali as secretary. Mawethu Rune was announced as the region’s preferred candidate for secretary general.

The outcome of the conference has put a damper on Pule Mabe and Ronald Lamola’s chances of making it to the presidency of the youth league.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Mxenge said the new leadership would work against factionalism and reckless talk on social networks by league members.

“Our work going forward is to ensure that we lead everyone even those who are not members of the youth league.

“Going to 2016, we have to ensure that the ANC gets the youth vote for local government elections.”

The league will hold its provincial conference next month. — abongilem@dispatch.co.za
