Controversial councillor not on PR list for August elections

Controversial Buffalo City Metro councillor Ayanda Peter, who forked out R250000 of taxpayers’ money for an egg-and-spoon race that never took place, is facing the axe from council.

The funds formed part of a R17.3-million sports sponsorship programme which the metro’s sports sponsorship committee, led by Peter, allocated without council’s approval last year. Peter’s name has not been included on the Dr WB Rubusana (BCM) ANC proportional representation (PR) list.

Attempts to get comment from Peter were not successful yesterday.

Another member to have fallen from grace is mayoral committee member community services head Nomfezeko Ngesi, whose name has dropped down the list and appears at number 38.

Rufus Rwexu, a former senior councillor who headed the metro’s health and public safety portfolio, only made number 59 on the 65-person list.

Meanwhile, BCM ward councillor Monwabisi Mahodi has been sidelined after not getting a nomination for a ward position. Mahodi previously asked for the intervention of the ANC’s national lists appeals committee to look into his exclusion.

He could also not be reached for comment yesterday at the time of writing. Both Mahodi and Peter were part of an ANC faction in the region that held a secret meeting last year which pitted former ANCYL provincial chair, Ayanda Matiti against former ANC regional chair Zukiswa Faku.

The Matiti-led faction met at a lodge outside Gonubie and the main address was given by Matiti’s close confidante and former ANC Youth League’s provincial secretary Mziwonke Ndabeni.

Dr WB Rubusana region secretary Mkhawuleli Maleki said any councillor not on the list was either not nominated or did not make the threshold.

“Democratic processes took place. So no one was excluded,” he said.

Some branch general meetings in the region still need to convene, while the party also needs to address some pending appeals.

“There are branches that need to reconvene after their appeals, so we need to implement the decisions of the appeal,” Maleki said.

“There are two wards that need to conclude their appeal and there are those that need to reconvene.” — siphem@dispatch.co.za
