Matiti on political comeback trail

Former ANC Youth League provincial chairman and boxing promoter Ayanda Matiti is making a dramatic comeback into full-time politics.

Matiti has been appointed as convener of the ANCYL’s newly established Dr WB Rubusana (formerly Buffalo City Metro) regional task team (RTT).

The 25-member RTT was unveiled on Sunday at a special regional general council (RGC) meeting held at the University of Fort Hare’s East London campus.

Their appointment comes weeks after the league’s Dr WB Rubusana regional executive, led by ANC proportional representative councillor Xolani Witbooi, was disbanded by the provincial task team (PTT) led by Mziwonke Ndabeni.

Matiti has been appointed alongside BCM league activist Yongama James, who has been deployed as RTT coordinator.

Surprisingly, also making the cut in the 25-member team is Matiti’s younger sister Sibongile, who is also an emerging boxing promoter.

The rest of the region’s task team includes Mandla Mdlangazi, Thembakazi Gqomo, Zonke Mayekiso, Vusi Mba, Zukiswa Mngxe, Uvile Malgas, Xolile Gorata, Amanda Mxhalisa and Siphiwo Ntwanambi.

In addition, Siphelo Tshakatsha, Viwe Maliti, Nkosinathi Malinga, Maliviwe Bata, Luvo John, Xolani Nontshinga, Majeke Kwanele, Mzwanele Lobese, Anele Macibela, Lubabalo Mati, Sipho Kilani, Simbongile Gulwa and Oko Ntshokoma complement the team, whose main task is to take the region to its elective conference.

All deployments were confirmed yesterday by Ndabeni, who said the PTT’s stance was to appoint experienced former leaders of the youth league, “who will not have any interest to contest for positions when such regions go to their elective conferences”.

Ndabeni said they had already appointed task teams in all disbanded regions.

Matiti yesterday said he was equal to the task of making sure the league in the region had “a radical, revolutionary political life”.

In the OR Tambo region, the PTT disbanded the ANCYL’s leadership and also replaced it witha RTT. The move is seen by some in the party as a boost for provincial ANC chairman Phumulo Masualle’s chances for a third term.

The OR Tambo region joins five other regions dissolved since the PTT took over.

At a special RGC meeting on Sunday, a former youth league leader in the region, Mzuxolile Hlazo, was appointed convener, while Lihle Tshingana was deployed as coordinator.

Hlazo’s task team includes Makhosandile Msuduka, Breakfast Tuleka, Mncedisi Mdakane, Khuthala Ndabetha, Zisanda Luvantyu, Nkoliso Mbaleki, Sinawo Mlombile, Zandile Bambusiba, Mawande Mgangwa, Siphokazi Njisane, Andile Malindi and Nontlonipho Mbhungelwa.

Ntombifikile Gwebityala, Nomawethu Mgabadeli, former youth league regional leader Zamile Mtsotso, Mpheleli Gagashe, Siphokazi Dladla, Madoda Madikiza, Ntombekhaya Diko, Xolile Mbazana and Thoko Mqoqo, will also form part of the task team.

Neither Hlazo nor Tshingana could be reached for comment.

Speaking about the appointment of the RTT, a party insider said: “The group appointed consists of mostly those who had been in youth league leadership before, and who have since been sidelined for their stance in unifying the organisation.

“They have always been clear about maintaining unity in the organisation, and the current provincial chair [Masualle] is the face of that unity in the province.

“Hence we say his chances have received a boost.” —
