The ANC national conference in Nasrec mandated the incoming NEC to initiate a process towards the amendment of the country’s constitution section 25 to achieve land expropriation without compensation.
This was announced by outgoing chair of the Economic Transformation Commission Enoch Godongwana who confirmed that the decision was arrived upon following “rowdy engagement” that “nearly collapsed conference”. However, said Godongwana, the expropriation of land without compensation will be done if it is sustainable and for “public purpose” only. There were also no timelines set as to by when will this constitutional amendment be achieved.
This while the ANC also conceded that “there was general anger across board” about the land question in South Africa. However, the ANC also stressed that it would nib illegal land invasion in the bud should opposition parties use this resolution to agitate for such.
