Former Eastern Cape premier Nosimo Balindlela has dumped the DA and rejoined the ANC.

In a shock move revealed in a statement by DA Eastern Cape leader Nqaba Bhanga, Balindlela is said to have told the DA that she “feels the need to serve the ANC”.

Balindlela tendered her resignation yesterday morning after holding two meetings with party leaders in the Eastern Cape last week.

Bhanga said Balindlela was “misguided” in her decision, “as ANC corruption and maladministration have robbed the poor of billions”.

Said Bhanga: “We thank her for her participation in the DA’s efforts to build an alternative government in the Eastern Cape, and for her kind words of how she has enjoyed her time with us.”

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Bhanga said Balindlela had told the party’s leaders that she had been approached by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa.

“Mam Nosimo came to us and told us that she was approached by the ANC and that she wants to go and serve the ANC,” said Bhanga.

According to party insiders, Balindlela had been unhappy for some time in the party.

They claim that in a recent caucus meeting, Balindlela exploded and told the caucus that she had been approached by the ANC.

“She did not resign because she wanted to, she was compelled because she had expressed that she could go back to the ANC at anytime.”

DA caucus leader in the legislature Bobby Stevenson declined to comment on the resignation of Balindlela and referred all the questions to Bhanga.

Party spokesman Mlindi Nhanha said Balindlela met with Stevenson and others last week Thursday to tell them of her decision to resign from the DA. He said subsequent to that meeting Balindlela met with the federal chairman of the party, Athol Trollip.

“The DA wishes Balindlela well in her future endeavours and in her political career,” said Nhanha.

When the Daily Dispatch contacted Balindlela yesterday she hung up the phone.

ANC provincial spokesman Lulama Ngcukayitobi said the party was ready to welcome back anyone who was willing to come back. “We are happy she is returning to the ANC,” he said.
