Prins to bring act home first

East London-born comedian Virgil Prins will start his one-man show, Unnecessary at the Guild Theatre next week Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, who moved to Johannesburg in 2013 to pursue a career in comedy, said it was necessary to have his first one- man show in his home town before taking it to other cities.

“I’ve always had this dream that I would bring my first one-man show home. I’ve always imagined the big stage lights at the Guild and people laughing. I am glad I have this opportunity,” he said.

Prins has shared the stage with big names in the comedy industry including the likes of Loyiso Gola, Mark Banks, Chris Forrest, Deep Fried Man and Marc Lottering, to mention a few.

“This has been a long journey for me. I started comedy while studying at Rhodes University but it was not until I moved to Joburg that things started happening for me,” he said.

Prins has already had the opportunity to perform at the Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland.

“It has taken a while for me to get to this point in my career. Hosting your own show is a big deal, people won’t be coming to see me and five other comedians, it’s just me,” he said.

After performing many shows in Johannesburg, he was feeling confident.

“I have been perfecting my craft all these years and I feel positive about this.”

Prins has directed three successful collaboration comedy shows at the National Arts Festival.

In 2014, he was the opening act for Ndumiso Lindi’s Diluted People show at The Venue@Hemingways.

He said the audience could expect a bit of everything next week.

“There will be issues on current affairs, personal stories, witty humour and social commentary as well.

“I called the show Unnecessary because I want us to laugh at the unnecessary things life throws at us.

“I believe we should have a laugh about some things,” he said.

He also added that the show was suitable for the whole family.

From EL, Prins will take the show to Grahamstown and then Cape Town and Johannesburg.
