Protesters rage on both sides of Kei...demands turn into violent conflict with cops

Fiery service delivery protests erupted on both sides of the Kei River yesterday, resulting in road blockages and arrests.

In Buffalo City Metro, Eluxolweni residents closed the N2 between Mdantsane and East London.

The protesters, who are from Ward 17, want their councillor, Phumla Yenana, removed.

Community leader Xhanti Bholo said they had engaged with the municipality over the lack of delivery from Yenana and had consulted the ANC regional office requesting her urgent removal.

“We have written to Gura , who is the acting regional secretary but we are yet to see any action. Yenana does not represent the interests of the entire ward but the interests of the people who are her allies,” said Bholo.

Yenana and Maleki could not be reached for comment at the time of writing yesterday.

In Dutywa east of the Kei, a group of 10 people, including a few prominent business owners, were arrested yesterday after service delivery protests erupted in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The protest by disgruntled Mbhashe municipality residents follows a march to hand over a petition to authorities by ratepayers and other community members last month.

Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha confirmed to the Dispatch that eight men and two women were arrested, but by the time of writing yesterday, they had not been charged. Police have worked tirelessly to try and defuse the situation.
