R70m fraud case accused appears

An East London man accused of stealing more than R70-million from Floorworx Africa yesterday handed himself over to police after skipping town for four days.

Henry Louis Fourie Schreuder, who faces more than 700 counts of fraud, handed himself over at the Hawks office in Oxford Street yesterday. He was in the company of his wife, Karin and their 25-year-old son, Henry jnr.

In his affidavit read out in court, Schreuder stated: “Since my suspension I still offer my assistance to my employers and the investigating officer. I am not a flight risk and I am always available to offer my assistance. I have not once made any attempt to abscond and flee despite being aware of the investigation.

“Unfortunately the police never contacted my attorney in the settlement negotiations who is in Pretoria . The investigating officer made contact with me and invited me to come and consult with him on Friday.

“He told me he was going to charge me. My attorney informed me I should cancel any arrangement I have made with the I/O and come to Pretoria for consultation.

“My attorney told me the police had no interest to release me on bail and that they were going to detain me for the long weekend. I had no intention to abscond I was acting on instruction from my attorney.”

Bail was granted and the condition included that Schreuder remains under house arrest. Secondly he has to point out all assets he owns to the Asset Forfeiture Unit. He told the court he will comply. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
