‘Remove names of those under cloud’

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the province has called on the ANC to remove the names of all councillor candidates implicated in criminal cases.

The call came from SACP provincial secretary Xolile Nqatha yesterday. Those under a cloud should just step aside without having to wait for the ANC to act against them, he added.

“We are appealing to personally, for the sake of our movement, to step aside. At the same time, we are confident that the ANC will put processes in place because I know for a fact there will be a vetting of the public representatives on the list.”

Several ANC leaders face charges for various offences ranging from murder, corruption and fraud. These include ANC  members in OR Tambo such as Thandekile Sabisa and Lawrence Mambila, who were arrested two months ago in connections with the murder of regional leader Xolile Nkompela’s bodyguard Zukile Nyontso last year.

Mambila is a mayoral committee member at the OR Tambo District Municipality and Sabisa its deputy mayor.

In  Dr WB Rubusana (Buffalo City Metro) region, former council speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele and her co-accused Sindiswa Gomba are still on the ANC’s election list for the metro. They were arrested in 2014 for alleged involvement in the misappropriation of more than R5.9-million meant to fund memorial services for former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral.

Last week, the Hawks arrested Amathole district  mayor Nomasikizi Khonza  and Nkonkobe councillor Nanziwe Rulashe for their alleged involvement in the misuse of ADM funds amounting to R2-million.

Said Nqatha: “Given the challenges facing the entire movement, it becomes important that represent us, represent our face as a movement ... must ensure that it is not tainted.

“That is why we would urge even at this hour, that those who are affected should make such decisions to not be part of public representatives until those matters are cleared in the due processes of the court.”

In the BCM case, the national integrity committee recommended that all the councillors implicated in the Mandela scandal be demoted to ordinary councillors.

This saw Simon-Ndzele being demoted as speaker and Gomba removed from the mayoral committee.

But Simon-Ndzele’s name  is now back on the BCM PR list at No3 and Gomba is in the top 15.

Nqatha said the provincial integrity commission “will have an interest as to who is on the list. We hope that those internal processes will help us address those issues.

“We are also relying on organisational processes. Both those processes will result in the outcome we hope for.”
