Removed speaker loses appeal

Court dismisses urgent application from Mnquma councillor.

AN URGENT application to set aside a decision by the Mnquma municipal council to remove its speaker has been dismissed by the Mthatha High Court with costs.

Sacked Mnquma speaker Nomnikelo Magadla yesterday approached the courts in an effort to have her removal as council speaker set aside.

She was sacked by the Mnquma council in an extraordinary council meeting last week.

ANC councillors had petitioned Magadla to call the meeting in order to effect her firing. The ANC supports her removal.

In her defence at the time Magadla claimed she was targeted after allegedly blocking unlawful motions in council.

She wrote of her frustrations to ANC provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle and party secretary Oscar Mabuyane.
