Rihanna ticket fever gathers pace in SA

“HEART racing. Temperature rising. Fast breathing. Adrenaline pumping. Loud screaming. Name calling. Intoxicating. Type of feeling when I hear Riri is coming to town.”

This was a Tweet from East London’s die-hard Rihanna fan Jordan van der Westhuizen when she heard the racy singer, known for her skimpy outfits and chart-topping pop hits, was coming to South Africa.

One of the Jamaican-born singer’s “biggest fans”, Van der Westhuizen’s Twitter feed is constantly updated with tweets on the singer.

Since it was announced that Rihanna was coming to the country to perform two concerts in October – one in Johannesburg on the 13th and the other in Cape Town three days later – crazed fans from around the city have been doing their utmost to ensure they get their hands on tickets, which are selling for between R275 and R930.

Glynice van Heerden said come “hell or high water” she would be at the Johannesburg show.

“She is my favourite female artist and this I why I have to see her live,” she said.

Cheraé Halley said it was also a goal of hers to see the songstress live in concert. “She’s the one that I think about all day-ay-ay,” said Halley, quoting Rihanna’s hit song, You Da One.

Sasha Terblanche said she was counting the days until she boarded her flight to Johannesburg.

“I am a fan because of her music,” said Terblanche. “I’m looking forward to an amazing concert with great music and great people.”

The Rude Boy singer will perform at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium on October 13 and the Cape Town Stadium on October 16.

Her hits include Diamonds, the fastest-rising single of her career and the first single to be released from Unapologetic, her seventh album.

Rihanna has won six Grammy Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards, and has sold more than 41 million albums and 150 million digital tracks worldwide. She holds the record as the top-selling digital artist of all time.

Her career has been dogged by controversy though, and unafraid to show skin, Rihanna has often been criticised for her skimpy outfits.

She also once posted pictures of herself with what appeared to be two marijuana joints.

In 2009 Rihanna and her then boyfriend Chris Brown received massive media attention following an argument that turned violent.

Rihanna suffered facial injuries and was hospitalised while Brown later pleaded guilty to assault. He was sentenced to five years’ probation and six months’ community service.

Fans unable to get their hands on tickets for her South African concerts can win them in the “Rihanna Stages of Style” competition.

Each week a different Rihanna lookalike will be chosen. Fans can upload their Rihanna-inspired look and get their friends to vote.

The fan with the highest number of votes will win tickets to either the Johannesburg or Cape Town concert.

All ticket winners will then be entered into a draw to win an exclusive backstage tour. — shanaazp@dispatch.co.za
