Runaway trailer kills cop, injures more

An Eastern Cape police officer died in a freak accident this afternoon on the R72 near the East London airport when a run away trailer slammed into his car.

East London police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said the accident occurred just after 2pm.

"The deceased is a Warrant Officer attached to the Kidds Beach police station, he was driving out of East London in a state car with two colleagues. They have been taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition," Marais said. He added that a case of culpable homicide was opened with the Fleet Street police station.

Three other people who were driving to East London in a Nissan Bakkie and Hyundai were also injured in the accident and were rushed to hospital with head injuries.

Marais said the trailer broke loose from a Bakkie that was travelling towards East London before colliding with the vehicle driven by the deceased police officer.

The name of the deceased could not yet be released as his next of kin had not yet been informed of his death.

Traffic driving from in and out of East London was diverted to Breezivale road.
