SANDF soldier among the 14 dead on EC roads this weekend

A South African National Defense Force soldier was one of 14 lives that were lost in deadly accidents across the province in what was described as a "horror" weekend on our provincial roads by authorities.

The unidentified soldier was killed when a SANDF vehicle he was travelling in overturned while towing another military vehicle.  Details of the accident were still sketchy at the time of going online

Heavy rains and bad roads were attributed as the main contributors of the fatalities in the eight accidents that took place over the weekend.

Eastern Cape department of transport spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca confirmed that a SANDF soldier was among those that lost their lives in a freak accident on Saturday.

Kumbaca said four people died when a taxi driver and three passengers were killed on the spot during a head-on collusion between an Avanza and a Quantum on the Mdantsane Access road also know as the Black Road on Saturday morning.  Nine other passengers were rushed to Frere Hospital were said to be unconscious and in critical condition

Kumbaca said on Saturday morning three people lost their lives when they were involved in a car crash on the N10 north of Middelburg just outside Eastern Cape border.  Also on Saturday morning, Kumbaca added that, two people died on the N2 between East London and King William's Town. He said there was one fatality yesterday near Flagstaff and  another fatality near Ngcobo on Friday night.

Speaking to DispatchLive today, Kumbaca said most of these accidents were as a result of bad weather which has been hitting the province since Friday.  Heavy rains resulting in poor driving visibility was experienced by motorists this weekend.

"Because of bad weather conditions in our province this weekend we call upon motorists to exercise extra caution," Kumbaca said.

According to Kumbaca one pedestrian died in the Mthatha CBD after being hit by a car in York Road, another pedestrian was fatally wounded on the N2 between Qumbu and Mthatha at Mrhambeni on Friday.
