Screaming boy scares off ‘hitmen’

Rival wanted councillor taken out

A CHILD of five frightened off four armed thugs by screaming at the top of his voice when they arrived to attack his grandmother, Buffalo City Ward 13 councillor Ncumisa Mekane at the weekend.

Mekane said her grandson woke up at about 2am on Saturday morning and screamed at the sight of the gun-wielding men in their Reeston house. He even tried to ward them off and the thugs had to abandon their plans as they were worried the neighbours would come to see what the noise was about.

But before they sped off, they ransacked her home, taking a laptop, a tablet, two televisions sets, jewellery and money. They then jumped into a getaway vehicle.

“When they came in they said we must not make any noise to wake the neighbours but my grandson was screaming as he was scared of them. He tried to push at them while they were carrying their firearms and other sharp objects. He was not aware of the danger of weapons they had. They managed to flee. That was the scariest hour of my life,” she said.

Cambridge police spokesman, Captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed that a case of house robbery had been opened.

“The police are investigating a case of house robbery and no one has been arrested. Police are investigating what happened at the house,” said Mbi.

The men allegedly told Mekane that they had been hired to kill her but one of the men recognised her face and stopped the other men from shooting.

She told the Dispatch that the men “became open to her” and told her that they were sent by a political rival within the ANC.

“They told me that they were sent to kill me and they were brave enough to tell me the person who sent them here. The person is a political rival within the party and this is motivated by the upcoming elections among other things,” said Mekane.

“I was shaken because this happened while I was with my grandson who was just recently released from hospital after a vehicle accident. I prayed hard for them to spare us our lives. My grandson woke up and tried to fight them off, I was worried that they could shoot us dead,” she said.

Mekane said the men were in her house for more than an hour. “I was scared. They broke my door and they told me that they were told to tie me with a wire, hit me with a sharp object in the head or shoot me and burn my house while I am still inside it,” said Mekane.

Mekane said she was lucky that one of the hired hitmen was a person who knew her. “God was by my side. I don’t know what could have happened if that man was not with them.”

Her grandson woke in the middle of the fracas. “They told me to hide under the blanket and not look at them but my grandson woke up and started screaming. I was worried that they could shoot us because of his screams,” said the shocked Mekane.

When asked about the political rival, Mekane said all the information was given to the police. “I will tell the council about this as well,” she said.

Attempts to get a comment from BCM speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele were unsuccessful as her phone was off all day. —
