Second suspect arrested for Mthatha nun’s murder

POLICE arrested a second man on Friday in connection with the murder of Mthatha Catholic nun Sister Mary Paule Tacke.

The 21-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the murder of the 82-year old nun.

They allegedly forced her into her white Hyundai Atos at gunpoint.

Her body was found a day later dumped in a stream near Tyara village in Libode, about 60km from where she was abducted. Police believe she may have been strangled.

Her death has been widely condemned with O R Tambo Business Forum chairman Vuyisile Ntlabati yesterday expressing concern over escalating crime in Mthatha.

He said it was pathetic that someone would kill a nun. He said crime was posing a serious threat to local business.

“Small businesses now have to incur extra costs as they have to install security measures like alarm systems. Law enforcers must enforce the law and there should be increased police visibility,” he urged.

He called for stricter by-laws governing liquor-selling businesses, arguing that those found operating illegally should be closed down. — sikhon@dispatch.co.za
