Tension over who is the main “bull in the kraal” between two security chiefs in the Bhisho legislature nearly ended in a punch-up recently.

Legislature internal security head Wonga Manina and the legislature’s static police protection head Lieutenant-Colonel Zolile Hakula deny they nearly came to blows.

But seven legislature officials and politicians confirmed the bad blood between the two.

The two security bosses were said to have had a heated war of words at a dinner ahead of the state of the province address in King William’s Town on February 19 which nearly saw punches traded outside.

Various sources speaking on condition of anonymity said the feud was “compromising security at the institution”.

It is understood the row was over who had higher authority.

A senior official said: “It got worse during the pre-Sopa dinner when a heated argument erupted with both losing their cool and nearly engaging in a fist fight which was prevented when some onlookers intervened.

“There is a long standing feud between the two concerning who is actually in charge of security at the legislature.

“It seems there are blurred lines over who is supposed to do what concerning security,” said the senior official.

Hakula yesterday denied the row saying: “These are just pure lies or a propaganda being pushed by people who have a mission only known to them.”

Manina also denied there were tensions.

Legislature spokeswoman Bulelwa Ganyaza said: “We have no record of such incidents. However if it did happen it is regrettable.” — asandan@dispatch.co.za
