Eastern Cape afro soul musician Lilitha Bidla is fast making a name for herself with the release of her debut single Marikana, which features Bongo Maffin’s Stoan Seate.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Bidla said the song was dedicated to the 2012 massacre.

“The song was originally just a poem, which I wrote after watching a documentary on the massacre.

“I was so touched by the pain suffered by those who had lost their loved ones in the tragedy,” said Bidla.

She said she writes about her personal experiences and the events that happen around her.

“Although I did not lose anyone to the massacre, I have experienced loss and I understand the pain that comes with losing someone you love, so the song is very personal and close to me.”

Bidla said it was thanks to her manager Luyolo Beku’s tenacity that Seate came on board.

“My manager is a big thinker and a visionary. He took the song to a couple of South African industry giants including Stoan, who upon hearing the song loved it so much that he needed no convincing in jumping on board with the track. I am happy because he gives it that national appeal, thus introducing me to an even wider audience,” said Bidla.

She said she was inspired by Miriam Makeba.

“I love her music and her style and even today I still watch her videos. I think she was so brave and so determined to make it musically.

“I want to write relevant and powerful music that will not only change someone’s life but will also stand the test of time,” she said.
