State-of-the-art stadium for EL

A Multibillion - rand redevelopment of Buffalo Park cricket stadium is in the pipeline that includes a sliding glass dome to protect fans during adverse weather and nguni hide covered designer seats.

The stadium will be revamped with five-star change-rooms, food stalls serving everything from skaap kop to caviar and four refreshment stations – one at each corner serving a different beverage.

The revamp was announced after agreement between a range of stakeholders.

Today, the Dispatch can reveal that half of the money for the redesign will come from the unspent infrastructure funds which could not be used by slack provincial government departments.

Late last night, shortly before the end of the 2015-16 financial year, officials burning the midnight oil in Bhisho managed to convince National Treasury to transfer back to the province R530-million in cash which had already been sent to Pretoria after lying unspent for most of the year.

The tranche is sitting safely in the private banking account of the city’s special projects manager.

A Government spokesman was elated at the sudden upturn in the city’s and province’s fortunes.

“At least now the city gets a valuable asset and our colleagues won’t be lambasted for not spending monies,” he said.

Cricket supporters will no longer have to run home in the rain – if the heavens open, the glass dome will slide closed, creating a cozy venue.

Work is anticipated to start immediately and will be ready by April 1 next year.

And when no other events are scheduled, the dome will be opened for star-gazers to stare into the clear night sky. Municipal officials have even expressed the hope that the upscale venue could be the “it” place for star-struck lovers to gather. — Sidenge kaTshazimpunzi
