Stoney Drift dumpsite has residents fuming as rubbish keeps piling up

Tensions are simmering between Amalinda residents and families who have made the Stoney Drift dumpsite their home.

Those living on the dump have been redirecting people wanting to dispose of their refuse on the dumpsite to open pieces of land in the suburb, leaving residents fuming.

When the Daily Dispatch arrived in the area yesterday morning, the entrance to the site was being fenced by Buffalo City Metro (BCM) staff, who turned away two trucks that arrived to off-load.

Metro spokesman Sibusiso Cindi said the dumpsite was closed on May 31.

“It must be noted that Stoney Drift transfer station was a garden transfer station and it was permitted and licensed as such.

“This therefore means that the facility was permitted to temporally store only garden refuse.

“The site was closed due to compliance notices issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

“Also, because the permit of the site expired and was not renewed by the city and the site was not operated in terms of its permit conditions.”

Cindi said other garden refuse sites are Beacon Bay, Kidds Beach, Kaysers Beach and Gonubie.

“The city is looking for a land in the Amalinda and Stoney Drift area. The land will be used as garden transfer station.

“In the event that the city does not get a suitable land, an alternative will be made for garden drop off points.”
