Thembisa takes back the reins

It’s back to work for Our Perfect Wedding host Thembisa Mdoda after a much-needed break.

Although Mdoda will only appear on the small screen again next month, she returned to work yesterday.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Mdoda said she had needed time away after working without a break since October.

“A show like this requires a lot of energy. I needed to reboot and relax so that I can do my best on the show,” she said.

In the past, viewers would compare the different hosts of the show on social media.

Mdoda said she knew people would do the same to her when she took over from comedian Tumi Morake.

“It’s normal for people to do that, but I told myself ‘I am enough’ and ‘I will do my best’. On my first show I received such positive feedback from the public,” she said.

Mdoda first studied graphic design but later pursued a career in acting.

“After watching a play in Grahamstown, I knew right then that theatre was going to be my next move. I told my dad and I enrolled at Wits for performing arts.”

The Mthatha-born actress received her first major break on SABC1’s Home Affairs drama series. She also recently featured on Mzansi Magic’s The Road.

But theatre will always be her first love.

As the host of Our Perfect Wedding, Mdoda is expected to spend the last week before the wedding getting to know the couple. This means being away from her family for several days.

“Planning and time management has helped me a lot during shooting Our Perfect Wedding,” she said.

“I always prefer spending time with my sons over social events. My break from the show came at a time that my family and I were planning a trip away.

“I got to spend time with my siblings, kids and father.”

Mdoda said she had gained something from each couple she had featured on the show.

“I always want the viewers to feel as though they were a part of the wedding. They get to see everything, from the stressful moments to the moment the couple says their vows.

“Love is beautiful and it should be celebrated.”

Asked if there was a special man in her life, Mdoda confessed she was indeed in love.

“I am happily in love with someone but I choose to keep my love life private. I got this person from God and he has turned my life around in such an incredible way, but I would rather my life remains private,” she said.

Mdoda said she did not believe in sharing her affections with her man on social media.

“Everything that happens is between us and God. I don’t want to invite social media into my private life,” she said.

From this week, Mdoda’s older sister Anele Mdoda will present the show until her return on July 10.
