Thrilling action for EL

EXCITEMENT is building for the start of the national schools’ water polo tournament which kicks off in East London tomorrow morning and runs to December 10.

The action is set to light up the city as 10 provincial teams and Zimbabwe fight it out for water polo supremacy.

At last year’s tournament in Port Elizabeth the Border teams did not fare too well, with only the girls’ U19A side making their division final.

This year, however, the 20 Border A and B teams, featuring around 250 players in both the boys and girls’ divisions from U13 to U19, are extremely confident going into their “home” event, with a few expecting to make the finals and possibly even win their respective divisions.

“We are definitely aiming for top fours in this tournament,” said the president of Border Water Polo Andy Reeves.

“Semifinals is where we would like most of our sides to progress to and I truly believe we will have three or four sides making finals as well,” added Reeves.

“We certainly have the potential to do it.”

The U16A boys and U19A and U15A girls are all looking good to challenge for top honours.

Around 100 players more than last year will be featuring at this event. The tournament, which was last held in East London in 2008, had 89 teams competing at that time. In the five years since it has expanded by a further 36 teams.

Tonight at the Joan Harrison pool complex, there will be a mini flippa ball game opening proceedings at 6.30pm, before the opening ceremony at 7pm.

Water polo action will get under way beginning at 7am tomorrow morning and matches are expected to finish between 5.30pm and 9pm tomorrow night at the various venues.
