Tributes flow in for Vuyo Mbuli

TRIBUTES poured in yesterday for renowned SABC television and radio presenter Vuyo Mbuli, who died on Saturday night at a Bloemfontein hospital.

Mbuli collapsed at the Free State Stadium while watching a Super Rugby match between the Cheetahs and the Reds from Australia.

Messages from people in all walks of life poured in, including a statement from President Jacob Zuma’s office yesterday.

Zuma described Mbuli as a patriotic and positive person.

“It is hard to think of a more patriotic and positive person than Vuyo. He was always cheerful and the whole nation will miss his smile and encouraging words.

“I wish to express, on behalf of government and the entire South African population, our words of condolence to the Mbuli family, friends, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation,” Zuma said.

Mbuli had been a presenter for SABC’s Morning Live since its inception in 1999 and also presented Morning Talk on SAFM.

According to the SABC website a family spokesperson told the broadcaster the cause of death had not yet been determined.

Loved for his humour, his quirky presenting style and his trademark “sharp sharp, eita da” sign-off on Morning Live, Mbuli died after he was rushed to the Mediclinic hospital.

He made his television debut in 1993 as a continuity presenter for SABC3 and started his radio career in 1995 on SAFM before he moved to being a sport presenter and a news anchor.

Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet also passed on her condolences to the Mbuli family.

“On behalf of the people of the Eastern Cape and the Executive Council, I wish to convey our deepest sympathy at this sad time to the Mbuli family and the entire SABC for the untimely passing of Mbuli.”

DA spokesman Mmusi Maimane said: “Vuyo was always fair, always asking questions in a way that gave you a chance to state your side.

“He personified what it meant to be a warm, engaging and tolerant South African.”

“We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues as they struggle to come to terms with their tragic loss.

“We wake up poorer today,” said Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven.

Co-presenter on Morning Live Leanne Manas tweeted yesterday: “We created magic together for 2 hours every morning for 9 years.

“I’m devastated! Not sure how to do it without you. I will miss you so much!”
