East London’s notorious Mdantsane Access Road – or Black Road – has claimed more lives.

Tragedy struck yesterday morning when four vehicles collided near Gompo, leaving two people dead and four critically injured.

Seven people sustained minor injuries in the accident, which took place after 7am.

The driver of a Toyota Tazz and his passenger were killed in the crash.

Police and transport officials yesterday said they were still busy with investigations and were unable to provide details of how the accident occurred.

Crash survivor Aubrey Best, who was with his wife and four-year-old daughter at the time, said he and a Toyota Quantum driver were travelling towards town.

The Tazz had been travelling in the opposite direction and allegedly attempted to overtake in the fast lane when the driver lost control and smashed into another car.

It was alleged the Tazz then moved over into oncoming traffic, hitting the Toyota Quantum, which then spun around and Best then collided with the Tazz.

Although the deceased were not identified yesterday, Duncan Village police said the driver of the Tazz was believed to be a 27-year-old man and his passenger a 39-year-old Braelyn woman.

Best, who had been on his way to drop his daughter at school and then go to work, said he did not know how he survived the crash.

When the Saturday Dispatch arrived at the scene, Best was still collecting some of his vehicle’s parts that were scattered on the road.

“I’m still not well and I don’t even know how we survived. My child is very traumatised by what happened. They had to be rushed to hospital,” Best said.

Blood stains and toys were just some of the evidence left at the scene as fire fighters and police cleared the road.

Traffic had to be redirected and later one lane was opened for vehicles travelling to town. By 9am yesterday, most of the wreckage had already been cleared.

Transport department spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca noted that the accident happened during peak morning traffic, when people were rushing to work and school.

“We are once again pleading with motorists not to travel at high speed.”

Police spokeswoman Warrant-Officer Hazel Mqala said police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.
