Two sisters killed in N2 crash in EL

Two sisters – one a medical student and the other a top Clarendon pupil – were killed in a crash on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened on the N2 near Hemingways when the car in which they were travelling went off the road, struck a guardrail and crashed into an embankment.

The two young women have been identified as Anitta Ncapo, 17, in Grade 11 at Clarendon Girls High, and her 22-year-old sister Nolubabalo Ncapo, who was a medical student studying at Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape.

Eastern Cape traffic authorities and paramedics, who attended the scene, said there were no other occupants in the red Opel Corsa.

They  believe Nolubabalo was driving.

Eastern Cape Arrive Alive spokesman Tshepo Machaea said it seemed  the driver had lost control of the vehicle before it overturned and landed on its roof.

Alderson Ambulance spokesman Jason Leicester said Anitta, who was seated on the passenger side, was declared dead on the scene.

“The other sister, presumably the driver, was taken to Life Beacon Bay Hospital but she died an hour after being admitted,” he said.

Clarendon Girls High School principal Pat Rose   described Anitta as an overachiever who was due to head up three portfolios  at the school in 2015.

“It was devastating news. Anitta had just been elected a school prefect for next year, choir leader and chair of the debate society.

“She was a young person with a whole life ahead of her. She was a high-principled scholar and a future leader of our country. She was a happy young person and her sudden death is a great loss, not only for the school but for her family as well,” said Rose.

The family were too distraught to speak to the Daily Dispatch yesterday.

A friend of Nolubabalo, who asked not to be named, said she had last seen her at a picnic party on Saturday afternoon.

“We actually spoke that day and she was in a celebratory mood, having just completed her fourth year at varsity. She told me she was only left with two years.

“She matriculated from Clarendon in 2010 and was the best student in her class.”

The friend said she had been shocked to learn of Nolubabalo’s death yesterday  morning.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said they had opened a culpable homicide docket in relation to the crash.

“Our investigation into the real cause of the accident is under way,” he said.

Machaea said another four people had died in Aliwal North and Cofimvaba in two separate accidents on Monday afternoon.

“The one accident was on the R58 between Aliwal North and Lady Grey, where two people died during a head-on collision.

“The second accident was on the R61 between Cofimvaba and Ngcobo.

“A driver and a passenger crashed and died while allegedly being chased by taxi drivers after the driver stopped to pick up a hitch-hiker.

“Police are busy following up on this allegation,” said Machaea.

Machaea advised motorists to take road safety to heart. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
