UDM calls for Madonsela to be protected

Lawyer feared for her life during probe.

UNITED Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa has called on civil society to help protect the country’s public protector Thuli Madonsela from attacks by the ANC-led government.

This follows the release of her damning report last week on alleged improprieties related to the controversial upgrades at the taxpayers’ expense to President Jacob Zuma’s private home in Nkandla.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that Madonsela feared for her life during the investigation, and that she was worried about people who were inciting others, calling her an ‘agent’.

“We don’t know if ordinary lunatics or just unstable people on the ground could feel incited to harm me, given that people were being made to believe that I was trying to steal an election,” she told the Sunday weekly.

Holomisa said the ANC embarked on similar smear campaign when the Scorpions were rooting out corruption.

And to cover up corrupt elements the Scorpions, eventually, were dissolved and replaced with the Hawks.

“We cannot tolerate a situation where government is going to undermine an Chapter 9 institution. We saw this during the Scorpions era.

“President Zuma and his lieutenants discredited the Scorpions and eventually the Scorpions were closed down … as a result the corruption in this country sky-rocketed,” said Holomisa.

He said the Madonsela’s office was now under siege from the Zuma-led government for having released the findings.

Madonsela has recommended that Zuma pay a percentage of the amount the state spent on non-security upgrades including a cattle kraal and chicken run and a swimming pool.

Holomisa is gunning for the Eastern Cape premiership and announced he would spend the whole of the month campaigning in Transkei.

Holomisa said the quality of life in South Africa had regressed under the ANC-led government, and that it was high time voters punished the ruling party. —
