UPDATE: UFH students told to vacate campus

The scene was tranquil at the University of Fort Hare as students trickled out of the campus in numbers. Police were nowhere in sight with campus security reinstated to both entrances and exits.

Despite the initial communique, students were given an extension of 3 pm to evacuate all rooms, with the campus expected to be on shut down until next week Friday.

This, management said, was as a result of failed negotiations with the student leadership. Negotiations to resume after August 8.

The University of Fort Hare is on shut down today as the student protest continues. In the latest communiqué from university management, students were allegedly told to vacate the campus by 11 am.

Shortly before 11am, about 200 students were sitting on the grounds while a handful left with suitcases in hand.

Failure to do so would result in them being physically removed from the premises by police, they said.

At the top of their list of grievances is a lack of NFSAS (National Financial Student Aid Scheme) payout, which resulted in many of them not receiving their June exam results.

There has also been a motion of no confidence passed against the university's student representative council (SRC), who have been accused of not doing anything to assist them with the funding situation.

The main entrance was blocked with rocks, broken bottles and overturned bins.
