Students ordered to leave Alice till August
THE University of Fort Hare (UFH) campus in Alice was closed yesterday following a week of student protests over funding.
Students were yesterday served with an interdict and given until 11am to leave the campus.The deadline was later extended to 3pm.
Alice police spokesman Warrant Officer Bradley Rawlinson confirmed that police had been sent to the institution on Wednesday night.
“When the police arrived and tried to disperse the crowds the students retaliated by throwing stones. An extra police contingent from East London had to be called as back-up.”
Rawlinson said there were no reports of shots being fired or tear gas used. There have been no arrests. — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
