Van Rooyen refuses to comment on Dubai visit

Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Des Van Rooyen has refused to answer any questions regarding his trip to Dubai saying he has already responded on the issue.

At a briefing held in Pretoria to discuss readiness for the elections‚ journalists were told that only questions related to the statement would be entertained.

When Van Rooyen was asked about the trip‚ taken in December‚ at the same time as the Gupta family were in Dubai‚ an official said “we are not going to allow the Dubai question as the minister has already commented“.

Asked whether he was avoiding the issue‚ Van Rooyen said he had already responded on the matter and “that is a response you can use“.

Van Rooyen was supposed to address the media on Monday morning‚ but the briefing was postponed “indefinitely” on Sunday night.

He later told reporters in Port Elizabeth that the in-and-out trip on December 20 had been “private” and that he had paid for it himself.

He also said that could he afford to‚ he would have stayed a week.
