Veteran detective to head EL crime fight

East London’s lead detective, Colonel Mxolisi Mqotyana, has been promoted to the rank of brigadier and announced as the new station commander for Fleet Street Police Station.

His qualifications include a law degree, an honours degree in police science and a diploma in police management.

His vision, as he steps into the new post, is to restore community confidence in the police service, and he has urged his officers to commit to their work and rally behind him as he sets out to make 2016 a safe year for the city.

He fills the post left by Major-General Lungile Nqamqele, who was promoted to the position of East London cluster commander last year.

“My vision as the new East London police station commander is for the East London community to have restored confidence in the police,” Mqotyana said yesterday.

“I want the East London community to feel safe and secure by ensuring police visibility at malls and in the streets.”

His career as a policeman began in 1985 in Mthatha.

He became interested in policing while still a schoolboy at Palmerton Junior Secondary in Lusikisiki, he said, explaining that it was the novel Alitshoni Lingenandaba, which was part of the school curriculum, that inspired him to join the force.

“In this book there were two detectives investigating criminal cases and that made me want to contribute towards fighting crime.”

Brig Mqotyana has spent much of his 31-year career as a police detective with one of the highlights of his career being when he was on the team that investigated the attempted 1990 Transkei coup d’état.

Between 2005 and 2008 he served in Gauteng and Port Elizabeth as a captain and lieutenant-colonel. In 2011 he was promoted to colonel and became detective commander at the Fleet Street Police Station.

“I have a passion for police work. My desire to contribute towards fighting crime is what keeps me in the SAPS,” Mqotyana said. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
