Vice-chancellor vows rampage at varsity will not deter celebrations

The violent scenes that played out at the historic university of Fort Hare Alice last night have not deterred the institution's management from pushing ahead with the centenary celebrations.

Last night students went on a rampage burning university property and several tents linked to the centenary celebrations.

Tom said the violent nature and destruction of property goes against the spirit of engagement and desire to find common ground .

"Against this background we condemn in the strongest possible terms attempts by some elements within the student community to destabilise the centenary celebrations, which at this stage appear to be the target," he said.

DA Youth leader and MP Yusuf Cassim condemned the violet protests and called on the university management to address the students demands.

"The university and its management are playing for the futures of thousands of students in the Eastern Cape.

I had requested that UFH management be summoned to parliament to explain its gross mismanagement last year. The ANC stopped this from happening, and have still not agreed. The Minister has equally not taken any steps to address this corruption," he said.
