East London residents have aired their views on the finance ministry debacle.

Sithembiso Shiyane: “I can’t really say he’s unfit , but I think he wasn’t advised because there’s no particular guy who can dictate the terms of the economy of any country on his own.

A president is supposed to have advisers to inform him of what to do in such a situation.

“It reflects poorly on the economy hence this downward spiral.”

Bernard Strijdom: “Another ridiculous move making us the laughing stock of the world.

“We don’t have a better future at the moment.”

Juandre Liewenhuisen: “I think we are moving backwards. We are not going ahead in life. We are staying behind. It’s not good for the country at all.

“Why do they make such changes if they are not sure it’s the right person for the job? They must make sure before they get someone to do the job.”

Nokuzola Ndobe: “Inconsistency is not a very good thing. I think stability is very important, especially for our economy. The South African economy needs stability and the appointment of people who qualify for the job – people who will deliver according to the expectations of the people.

Gillian Davies: “Personally speaking I think it’s a sign of the country being in disarray. And government being in confusion. It’s not a good sign for international relations and business and the economy.

“I think the recently appointed minister of finance is a good move and hopefully it will bring more stability to South Africa. We’ve gained a bit of an improved reputation internationally but it’s frightening.

“I think he’s brought his rational and strategic planning for the country in to question.”
