Woman, 85, and her grandchild, 13, raped by intruder

A man accused of raping his neighbours – a grandmother, 85, and her granddaughter, 13 is due to appear in court this morning.

The grandmother and granddaughter were fast asleep in the early hours of Friday in Yonda village, Whittlesea when a man broke into their house, said police spokeswoman Lieutenant Namhla Mdleleni.

“He woke them up. He then tied them up with rope and raped them before fleeing.”

Mdleleni said the two victims were discovered by a neighbour later that morning, still tied up. “Police were called and an ambulance took the grandmother to Frontier Hospital in Queenstown. The grandchild was taken to Dongwe Hospital some 30km from where the incident took place.”

The rope had left deep cuts in their hands.

An investigation led to the arrest of a neighbour of the victims.

The man, 38, will appear in the Whittlesea Magistrate’s Court.

Mdleleni said police in Cofimvaba had opened an inquest docket after a woman, 60, died in her home while it was on fire at the weekend.

The woman lived in an isolated homestead of three huts situated amid bush in the Mtingwevu administrative area. Police said her nearest neighbour lived about 2km away.

Residents noticed smoke and upon reaching the scene found the homestead had been reduced to ashes.

“The woman was found burnt beyond recognition on Friday morning. The information we got from residents was that she lived alone.”

The cluster commander of the area, Colonel Gcinikaya Taleni, visited the scene and urged residents to come forward with information.

“Surely someone saw something. We are urging that someone to come forward with the information that will help us find closure on the matter.”

The woman’s identity is being withheld until police locate her relatives to inform them of her death.
