The song, which first hit air waves last Sunday on Wilson B Nkosi’s show on MetroFM, is titled Nelson Mandela., and the ballad features the songstress’ powerful vocals accompanied by guitar.
She sings: “Nelson Mandela/ Tata Madiba/ Father of the Nation/ Qawe la maqawe/ Akekho o fana naye/ [Hero of heroes/ There’s none like him]”.
Zahara, whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana, said: “I’m very excited and emotional at the same time. I trust that South Africans and the world will receive it and appreciate it. Above all else, I’m doing this in hon our of Tata Mandela.” said Zahara about the song.
The tribute song has special sig nificance for Zahara, who was the last artist to perform live for the frail former president at his Qunu home. Zahara gave the personal performance at his home in 2011 when where she performed Thekwana, dedicated to struggle icons such as Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Lilian Ngoyi and Winnie Madikizela- Mandela. She also sang her career- making hit Loliwe, earning her ap plause from a frail Mandela.
TK Nciza of TS Records said Zahara needed to record a song to thank Mandela for all he had done for the country.
“The song speaks to every South African and is a true reflection of who Mandela is and his commitment to the country,” said Nciza.
“Even at the Rivonia trial, he said he’ll oppose white domination and black domination, only a few people commit to such. You will be able to relate to the song, whether black or white.”
Nciza added that the tribute song, composed by Zahara and collaborators Robbie Malinga and Mojalefa Thebe, and executive-produced by Nciza and Zahara, took two weeks to record at a studio in Midrand, Johannesburg.
“She was in the studio working on a new album and we agreed that one of the first songs she must record is a tribute to Madiba. And here it is, enjoying such a great reception, and we have committed that some of the proceedings will go to the Mandela hospital for which she is an ambassador,” he said.
