Role of chiefs in politics

IT IS a distant memory now, but there was a time when many traditional leaders were captured by the patronage of homeland regimes and became agents of the larger divisive apartheid effort.

This took a violent turn in the late 1980s and through the early 1990s, particularly in areas such as KwaZulu-Natal, where many people died simply for belonging to a different political party.
