Paramedic killed in head-on crash

AN OFF-duty Dynamic Emergency Medical Services paramedic was killed on Sunday night when she was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle near Beacon Bay.

The woman, identified as 30year-old Celeste Harmse, was travelling in a VW Citi Golf with a passenger when the accident took place near Lavender Blue along the R102.

Details of what happened remain sketchy at this time but police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said 47-yearold

a man had been arrested for allegedly driving while drunk.

Marais said the man would appear in court on charges of culpable homicide.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Dynamic EMS spokesman Werner Bester said when they were called to the accident scene they were not aware one of their own was involved.

“It was a bad accident. She (Harmse) suffered some head and internal injuries and we think that is what led to her death, but luckily the person she was with survived. “It is a great loss for us.” The female passenger suffered back pains and was taken to Frere Hospital but was later discharged.

Bester described Harmse as a kind-hearted person who lived for her job.

“She was a kind, lovely lady who went out of her way to do her job and was good at it. Although she had only been with us for four months she fitted in as part of the family.

“When our paramedics went to the scene they did their best,” added Bester.

Dynamic paramedics rushed Harmse to Frere Hospital however she was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Messages of condolence were posted on social network site Facebook after Dynamic EMS posted news of Harmse’s death.

Diane de Lange wrote: “I was so sad to hear this news. She assisted my daughter when she was in an accident; what a lovely gentle girl. Condolences to her family.”

Meanwhile, Arrive Alive provincial spokesman Tsepo Machaea said two people were killed in an early morning accident yesterday on the R61 between Cofimvaba and Ngcobo.

He did not have further details of the accident.
