Retied nurse Nomfanelo “MaThole” Sishuba, of Mdantsane, has chosen to celebrate her 80th birthday by giving away 80 blankets to 80 elderly women and men from her community.

The 80-year-old said the gift of life should be appreciated, and as such one should give back to others in need.

“Our society has unfortunately lost all generosity.

“All the problems that we are facing and that our children are still going to face are deeply linked to the fact that people have lost ubuntu ,” said Sishuba.

Mathole, as she is affectionately known in her community, handed over the blankets at the Methodist Church of South Africa in NU1 yesterday during a church service.

She said the looks on the elderly women’s faces when she gave them their blankets was the perfect birthday gift.

“I have believed and valued the principle of giving. As young as I can remember, I have always known the blessing that comes with a giving hand,” said Sishuba.

The good deed by the pensioner comes just days after South Africa and the whole world celebrated Nelson Mandela International Day. July 18 would have been Madiba’s 98th birthday, a day that has been used to express humanity for the past six years.

“I am old now, I have all that God had intended me to have.

“I requested my children to help buy these blankets for my peers instead of throwing me a big party or buying me presents,” said Sishuba.

One of her neighbours, Linda Winchi, 73, who received a blanket, said such acts of generosity were what the world needed, especially at a time when corruption, crime and greed was so prevalent in society.

“I have never seen such humanity, she has shown us what love should be like.

“She has shared what she has with us,” said Winchi.
