Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says it feels as if he failed Mogakolodi Ngele after the player moved to BidVest Wits as part of a swap deal that saw Sibusiso Vilkazi join the Brazilians from the Clever Boys at the weekend.
Ngele and Cuthbert Malajila joined Wits as part of the agreement and Mosimane said it’s tough for any player to survive the high pressure environment that prevails at Sundowns.
With Wits finally agreeing to release Vilakazi to Sundowns‚ the Brazilians also had to agree to a deal which saw Malajila and Ngele heading in the opposite direction.
Mosimane hinted that the pressure of playing for a big club like Sundowns played a massive role in Ngele struggling to find his feet at the Premiership title- holders after his move from Platinum Stars last year.
“It’s the same at Pirates and Chiefs. You have got to make it when you get there‚” the Sundowns coach said.
“Sometimes they don’t make it at the big teams‚ but when they go back to a smaller team they flourish again.
“The yellow jersey is a heavy jersey. Here it is ‘win at all cost’. There is a lot of pressure and a lot of stress.”
Mosimane indicated he was also disappointed in himself for not being able to get the best out of Ngele while he was under his tutelage.
“Let’s be honest‚ ‘Tsotso’ Ngele did not get enough chances to play. First he had his injuries‚” said the coach.
“I also think he could have fought a little bit. I’m disappointed that he is gone.
“For me as a coach it is like I failed to get the best out of the boy. You saw at Platinum Stars how good he was. It is like I failed to get the best out of him. But this thing is mutual. He also needed to survive and fight‚ but he could not. He said he wanted to leave and you can’t keep an unhappy player for long.”
Mosimane added that he was grateful to Malajila for his contribution to the club since joining the Brazilians in 2013.
He praised the Zimbabwean international for his effort‚ stressing that he understood his reasons for wanting to go in search of a new club.
“Mala has done the best for us‚” said Mosimane.
“Whenever he played‚ he never played with his handbrake on. He lowered the handbrake and he goes. He gave us his commitment‚ he gave us goals‚ he helped us to win the league and also in the Champions League.
“He’s right‚ he was not getting enough game time. He also does not want to lose his place in the Zimbabwe national side.”
