Ramaphosa appeals for unity in ANC after Eastern Cape conference

ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has made a passionate plea to former Eastern Cape ANC chairman Phumulo Masualle to “come back” in an effort to curb further divisions within the party in the province.

Ramaphosa was delivering a speech on behalf of the ANC national executive committee at the 8th Eastern Cape provincial conference held at the ICC in East London.

Masualle was defeated by his former secretary‚ Oscar Mabuyane‚ at the conference‚ which was filled with drama‚ fighting‚ accusations and counter accusations of manipulation of processes.

Drama ensued on Saturday night with delegates throwing chairs and physically engaging in a brawl.

“Like it is happening in KZN‚ we are saying we are all members of the same family and that is the ANC. Let us reach out to one another and I am also making a call to those comrades who are not here. Comrade Phumulo and those that are not here to comrade Phumulo and others‚ I am saying remember one thing and all of us must remember‚ we are all members of the family of the ANC. We must all come back and vote together…‚” Ramaphosa said.

He also bemoaned ANC members using courts to resolve party issues.

“We must resolve our things here among us rather than be rushing all over. The leadership of the ANC at national

level will be at hand to address the problems and the challenges and come with problems and resolutions‚” he said.

Ramaphosa also used his speech to call for the unity of the party ahead of the party’s national elective conference in December. He said that the Eastern Cape province should go to the national conference with “great wisdom”.

“The December conference stands out there as a beacon of hope. Where we will renew the ANC‚ that conference will rejuvenate the ANC‚” he said.

Ramaphosa said that the ANC should use the conference as a stepping stone for the December conference.

During a media conference on Sunday‚ Mabuyane said that there was no bad blood between him and Masualle and they would continue contacting each other.
