PSL season by the numbers…so far

With most teams having reached the midway point of their Premier League season‚ there is an opportunity to pull out the key numbers that have defined the campaign so far.

Not surprisingly‚ leaders Mamelodi Sundowns have the best home record‚ the major reason why they sit on top of the table after 15 games.

The Brazilians have taken 22 from a possible 24 points at home‚ their only blemish a surprise 0-0 draw with Polokwane City in late October.

They have scored 19 goals in their eight games‚ the best attack at home‚ and conceded just six.

Pitso Mosimane’s side have been less prolific on their travels‚ with three wins from their seven games and two defeats. Interesting‚ they have scored just five goals on the road‚ but have the best defence among the 16 top-flight teams‚ having shipped only three goals away from home.

Sundowns and Mpumalanga Black Aces are the only sides yet to lose a home game this season‚ while Kaizer Chiefs are the lone club yet to lose away.

Their seven matches on the road have yielded two wins and five draws — a source of frustration for coach Steve Komphela.

BidVest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has bemoaned his side’s lack of scoring ability in the last two seasons as a major factor why they did not win the league.

But they are comfortably the leading scorers in the 2015-16 campaign with 29 goals so far from their 15 games‚ five ahead of Sundowns and Chippa United in joint second-place.

It is a great sign for Wits and creates their best chance yet of winning a maiden PSL title.

Chiefs have been involved in the most draws so far this season (seven)‚ and Chippa the least (one).

In fact‚ if you are looking for goals in games‚ search no further than Chippa‚ who have both scored and conceded 24 goals this season for a total of 48 in matches involving them.

The least watchable team this season has been Bloemfontein Celtic‚ who have had a total of just 27 goals (13 for‚ 14 against) scored in their games this campaign.

Not surprisingly‚ bottom side Maritzburg United have the leakiest defence having shipped 29 goals‚ and that from just 14 games.

They are also the only side yet to record a home win with three draws and four defeats in their seven games at the Harry Gwala Stadium. They will rue giving up winning positions at to both Chiefs and Orlando Pirates this campaign.

Jomo Cosmos and University of Pretoria are the only teams yet to win away from home.

It is also win or bust for AmaTuks at home after they won three and lost five of their eight games so far.

Striker Thobani Mncwango’s value to Polokwane City is easy to measure‚ he has scored seven of their 14 league goals this campaign‚ or exactly half. No other player has a higher ratio
