The hunt for Eastern Cape gospel music talent in the Battle of the Municipalities (Bom) search has been postponed.

Auditions were scheduled to take place at the Orient Theatre tomorrow, but Bom founder Sydney Qoqonga said they had to be postponed because of another event at the venue the same day.

“We are still not sure of the new date and venue, but the contestants will be notified via SMS,” he said.

The talent search is the brainchild of Qoqonga and supported by the SA Local Government Association (Salga), endorsed by Vodacom and driven by Nissan with the Daily Dispatch as a media sponsor.

The Bom talent search, involving eight municipalities, including the Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros, was launched last month.

The panel of judges, headed by composer and producer Sizwe Zako, has already visited King William’s Town, Butterworth, Mthatha and Mount Alyiff and will travel across the province to search for undiscovered talent.

Those who think they have what it takes should make sure they impress judges like Zako who has produced for many artists including South Africa’s queen of gospel Rebecca Malope.

At previous audition centres, the judges faced a situation where contestants sang the same songs, or songs that are not good enough.

One of the judges, Nokubonga Maci, said the contestants should take time to prepare. “There is a lot of anticipation with East London the expectation is very high,” she said.

Maci advised the contestants to take the competition seriously.

“Some sing just for the sake of singing. They forget this is a competition,” she said.

The judges are looking for 35 winners, who will later be whittled down to five. Out of the five, the judges will select one winner.

All the winners will battle it out and the overall winner – who will walk away with R50000 and a recording deal – will be selected. — sinom@dispatch.co.za
