Seaside home causes outrage

A TRIPLE-storey R2-million seaside home under construction has caused a storm of outrage from a neighbour who says the developer defied an official instruction to not create “aesthetic pollution” on the skyline.

Harmse said: “It has been so frustrating to receive no response from Great Kei and Dedeat and the building just keeps going up.

“There are scores of new homes which are planned to be built behind the Kriel triple-storey and their views will be blighted and blocked. Will they be forced to put up triple-storeys too – where will it stop? Glen Umhlanga?

“We want rules and regulations enforced. Where is the threatened backlash?” But Kriel said the ground floor of the home was at the same level as the natural ground, and the basement garage was excavated into the hill.

The builder, and Kriel’s nephew, Brewer Kriel, said no environmental impact assessment was required since the house was 150m from the flood line.

“Our building plans were approved by Great Kei Municipality earlier this year,” he said.

Eden Kriel said: “We are sticking to the rules. I don’t want to fight. I have lived here all my life. I also want to look after the place and make it nice.”

The home is built in front of Brewer Kriel’s plot – and he had no complaint. —
