Security jacked up after Mthatha taxi violence

Security has been beefed up in Mthatha and Port St Johns following taxi violence which has claimed 14 lives in Mthatha and Libode.

Government has deployed 160 police officers to hotspots as part of SAPS Operation Vulindlela.

The operation, rolled out yesterday as a measure to try and put an end to the ongoing taxi violence in the OR Tambo district, saw hundreds of police and traffic officers conducting stop-and-search operations in the two towns.

The operation, is being conducted by a multi-police unit consisting of the national intervention unit, tactical response unit, public order policing, the Hawks, crime intelligence, provincial traffic, King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) law enforcement and Nyandeni traffic officers.
