Shock as fourth family member murdered

A 59-year-old woman was shot and killed in a Mthatha village last night by an unknown number of gunmen wearing balaclavas.

The victim has been identified as Nokholeji Fuba. She was shot inside a rondavel at her home in Ndibela Village, in the Bityi cluster around 8pm on Tuesday.

Fuba’s 35-year-old daughter, who was present during the attack, survived.

Police recovered six 9mm cartridges from the scene.

Fuba’s shooting has rocked the village and left elderly women wondering who could be next.

Tuesday’s murder has brought to four the number of women killed from the same family in the Bityi cluster since June last year.

The first victim, Sisoyiyo Booi, was killed not far from Fuba’s home.

Booi’s niece, Vuyelwa Booi, said her mother Nominithi Booi, 70, and daughter Lulamela, 14, had been shot and killed on September 15.

Her 11-year-old nephew, who was with them at the time, miraculously survived the attack after he was shot in the head.

A heartbroken Vuyelwa pleaded with the perpetrators to stop the senseless killings.

Contacted for comment, Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela could not say if any arrests had been made in connection with last month’s murders.

According to Fatyela, the perpetrators in all the cases had walked into the victims’ homes and asked for them by name.

They would then open fire without saying a word before fleeing on foot.

Following Fuba’s killing, scores of men and women from the village gathered inside the yard as police investigators interviewed family members.

A police officer from from the Bityi cluster barred the Daily Dispatch from interviewing other family members.

No arrests have been made in connection with Fuba’s murder and police are investigating a case of murder. — loyisom@dispatch.co.za
