Smooth start of voter registration weekend in East London

The last weekend of voter registration got off to a smooth start in East London.

Voters flowed steadily into voting stations as people went to updated their addresses or register for the first time.

About 5 million voters had earlier received text messages from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) informing them that their addresses were not on the voters roll.

Beacon Bay resident Mawande Makalima said when he received the text he was not even planning to register. “My wife and I received messages informing us that our names did not appear in the voters roll,” Makalima said.

Another voter said had the IEC not sent him the SMS he would have stayed at home and assumed that his details were correct.

Wayne Strauss said: “I received an SMS to come and update my residential details when I’ve voted in every single municipal election over the past couple of years. So I can’t understand that my address just disappeared from the voters’ roll.”

The five million messages were not sufficient as more than a million people were not sent the SMS. This, according to Strauss, will impact the outcome of the upcoming local government elections.
