16 school teams to vie for Vides water polo glory

Schools water polo action kicks into high gear today as the 40th annual Vides water polo tournament gets under way at Selborne College this afternoon.

Fourteen school first teams and two school second teams will be battling it out in the prestigious competition and they will be going all out for glory.

This year the competition has been changed to be played over three days, having traditionally been held over two.

Selborne as hosts and defending champs will be aiming to impress once again.

“We are extremely privileged to be hosting a tournament of this calibre as a large number of the leading water polo schools in South Africa will be measuring themselves up against each other over this weekend,” Selborne headmaster Andrew Dewar said.

Selborne will be looking to retain their title and put in another top performance in the competition.

Former 2014 and 2013 Vides champs St Andrew’s College will also be back and raring to go and they will be a threat as always as they try to reclaim the title.

Grey High School, champions in 2012 and 2011, and St Alban’s will also be dangerous opponents and these four teams – Selborne, St Andrew’s, Grey and St Alban’s – should be considered favourites for the title.

Other East London teams who are in the mix will want to give a good account of themselves in the tournament.

Stirling, Port Rex and Hudson Park will lead that charge from the local front and will look to put in as good a performance as possible.

Other teams taking part in the tournament are Collegians (Selborne seconds), St Andrew’s seconds, Paul Roos, Kingswood, St Charles, Pearson, Michaelhouse, Crawford and Northwood.

The opening game of the tournament will be an all-East London affair as Selborne take on Port Rex at 12.20pm.

Other interesting matches to watch on the day will be Stirling against St Andrew’s at 1.40pm, Hudson against Northwood at 5pm, Selborne against Michaelhouse at 5.40pm, and St Alban’s against St Andrew’s seconds in the day’s final game at 6.20pm.

Tomorrow will be a full day of Vides action with the first game between Stirling and Paul Roos starting at 7am.

The final pool match of the tournament will start at 3.40pm, with the rest of the games play-offs, and the final game of the day at 7.40pm.

On Saturday, the final day of play, the action gets under way at 7am and the final of the tournament will be played at 7pm.
