Hudson Park pull the trigger

THE Hudson Park First XI cricket team conquered all as they comfortably beat the Selborne First XI by six wickets to retain the T20 Algie Cup last week Tuesday.

Both teams went into the final game with the same amount of points after picking up six wins apiece and the match was essentially a winner takes all final.

“Having beaten Selborne twice already in the season we felt very confident going into the game, but it still took a great effort from the guys to set up the win,” said inspirational Hudson Park captain Diego Jasson.

Selborne batted first and thanks to a sterling effort from the Hudson Park bowlers, were bowled out for a well below-par 81.

Great bowling efforts were put in by Tim Niemand 3/10, Ngazibini Sigwili (2/12) and Jasson (2/14).

Hudson batted second and managed to chase down the total with relative ease, finishing on 83/4 with 4.1 overs remaining.

Jasson finished as Hudson’s top-scorer on an unbeaten 31 and was named man-of-the- match after leading from the front with his brilliant all-round performance.

Hudson thus finished the season at the top of the Algie Cup leaderboard on 14 points after winning all seven of their games, followed by Selborne on 12 points in second and Stirling rounded out the top three on eight points.

Niemand played a vital part in Hudson’s victorious campaign after scoring 300 runs at an average of 60 and included great innings of 73 not out v Port Rex, 67 v Stirling and 59 v Cambridge, while also putting in some good bowling performances.

This marked Hudson’s eighth Algie Cup win in the last 10 editions and fourth in the last six years since the Selborne First XI decided to join the cup back in 2008.

Before that Selborne had been represented by their second team known as the Collegians.

This good form has seen Hudson Park cement themselves as East London’s top T20 cricket side in recent times.

“It was a very good way to end off a successful T20 season for the boys,” concluded Hudson Park first team cricket coach Dave Alers.
