Big buzz as Sunshine Coast all set to hit EL

THE 2013 Old Mutual Sunshine Coast Triathlon is set to hit the East London beachfront by storm this Sunday.

Over 600 professional triathletes are expected to converge on the Orient Beach for the swim-cycle-run event.

In a bid to accommodate triath letes at large, the race has been divided into five categories catering for the young and old.

In the Olympic distance, top-class triathletes will cover a 1.5km swim course, a 40km gruelling cycle route and conclude with a 10km run to the finish line.

The race will also feature the Elite Sprint Event (half of the Olympic distance), the Kids Triathlon (100m splash, 3km cycle and 1km run) with the Spur Sunshine Splash (half the Kids Triathlon distance).

Race organiser Dan Taylor yes terday confirmed they were expec ting one of the biggest fields in the competition’s history.

“With the South African Triathlon Championships having taken place last weekend we are expecting a big turnout.”

“About 600 athletes will take part in the Olympic Distance race and the Sprints.

“We are also expecting about 200 kids to take part in the Kids Triathlon and the Sunshine Splash,” said Taylor.

With the Buffalo City ITU Triathlon African Cup having successfully kicked off the season, the majority of professional athletes will be aiming to use the race as a platform to test their legs and fitness ahead of the much anticipated Spec- Savers Ironman South Africa in Port Elizabeth next month.

Other events taking place on the day will be the Coastal Hire Corporate Challenge and the Schools Sprints.

Entry forms are available at all cycling shops in East London.
