Chiefs stay way ahead of pack

AFTER slumping to their 14th draw of the season in 23 matches, Gavin Hunt says he has a team of strugglers at SuperSport United and there’s simply been no competition for Premiership log-leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

Hunt knows what it takes to win the league title, having done it three times in a row in 2008, 2009 and 2010, but he’s often labelled his team “poor” in almost every encounter this season.

It was no different after a goalless draw against Bidvest Wits at Milpark Stadium on Tuesday night, and he insisted it was not only SuperSport that have been sub-par in the Premier League this year.

“There’s no one that’s been able to match Chiefs, maybe with the exception of No2 , but the rest of us just haven’t been good enough this season,” said Hunt.

Many teams have had to be wary of the Pirates’ threat posed by the diminutive and nifty midfield trio of Oupa Manyisa, Daine Klate and Tlou Segolela and they could yet lead their side in retaining PSL, Hunt noted.

He said the dull draw against the Clever Boys was, in his opinion, SuperSport’s worst game of the campaign.

“We are now just battling and fighting for fourth position along with a few other teams because Chiefs, Pirates and maybe Platinum Stars are gone.

“We will carry on and even try to win the Nedbank Cup because we are a team of strugglers,” said Hunt, whose side remained fifth after Tuesday’s match.

The coach said the lack of competition and quality in the Premier League this season could help Chiefs win the title with more than 65 points for the first time since the PSL was reduced to 16 teams in 2002.

Amakhosi hold the current record of 63 points, when they were crowned champions in 2005. They defended their title a season later, but have since experienced a league championship drought.

“The competition hasn’t been good from all other teams. We’ve lacked a bit of quality all around,” said Hunt.

SuperSport have an African Confederations Cup first round second leg tie against Petro Luanda from Angola on Saturday clogging up their fixture schedule as they then face Chippa United in the league and Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals next week.

“We’ve got a different squad for all these competitions,” said Hunt.

“We are better when we are playing three times a week. I know that. ”

SuperSport are unbeaten in 12 matches, stretching back to mid-December.
